The way a turbocharged engine works

The most important advantage of using a turbocharger is an achievement of higher torque (increased power). It is possible by drawing in and then forcing compressed air. The intercooler, installed after the turbocharger, and before the intake manifold, cools down the charged air, thus more compressed air is forced into a cylinder. Due to the increased amount of oxygen, combustion is improved, and consequently the engine power is significantly higher. The turbocharger is powered with the flue gases. The kinetic and thermal energy of the flue gases makes the compressor move, meaning the turbine shaft, the motion of which is transferred either to the compression wheel (cold side) which is to draw in and then force the air into the intake manifold. Applying turbochargers in the internal combustion engines reduces emission of carbon dioxide by forcing the air-fuel mixture into a cylinder as much as possible, moreover the fuel consumption is reduced.
